Undoubtedly, Shakespeare could foresee
the future! It is indeed amazing when we
think of how and why the so-called 'second sex' or 'the fragile section of the society' has been, and still is the hottest among the topics
of discussion around the world, as if she is either a special creation meant to
be the platform of discussions, or so troublesome that she pops-up in every
talks. Rapes, sexual harassments, exploitations, are all topics discussed over
and over, and have lost its significance, which often fail to make a
flutter in people’s mind now. An unavoidable sickening fact is that, after all
these, nothing has changed, nothing at all, which unfortunately
points to the futility of such discussions.
The world runs after her physique, preoccupied in discussing what she wears, who touched her where, how she was mutilated, how much has she recovered, and her condition is well explained in percentages, ignoring what she really is. It is indeed sad that no one bothers to care for her tattered self and her mutilated identity. She is left alone to deal with the emotional turbulence within her, which she often fails to overcome. Even if her subjugated self manages to stir to life, the so-called traditions and cultural norms force them to remain congealed, deep down in her.
The urge to change should come from within, and the flame of confidence ought to be powerful enough to burn down the patriarchal norms that chain her down. Her individuality must be taken into account and her right to be a self- determining agent ought to be granted, for, the expression of her real self is truly significant for her existence. The honour of women should be measured not only by her capacity to uphold her bodily integrity, but also her mental strength and personality. After all, societal norms are not rules, but are just social constructs.
